In Windows XP, it’s common to run lower-level applications as a system level service. Deleting a key without completely understanding the effect can have disastrous consequences. Unless you want a process completely removed from your system, it’s extremely important to check the function of a registry key before deleting it just because it contains a reference to a process. It’s not uncommon for a process to have dozens of listings. One thing to keep in mind is that just because there is a reference to a process within the registry, it doesn’t mean that the registry is telling Windows to launch that process. You should be able to find the process within the registry. Now, enter the process name exactly as it’s shown in the task manager. Simply go to the top of the registry and then select the Find command from the Registry Editor’s Edit menu. If there is an undesirable process loading automatically, but you can’t find it in this location, you can always do a registry search. Normally, this will be empty, but if an application wants your computer to run a file one time on the next boot up, the file will be listed here.Īs you work through the registry, you should be able to match most of the running processes up with references within the registry. While you are in this part of the registry, you may also want to check the RunOnce registry key. You will just have to go through the list and see what belongs and what doesn’t. Some of these programs, such as your antivirus software, are desirable. This key contains all sorts of programs that are set to run at startup. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurentVersion\Run You can access most of the running processes by opening the Registry Editor, using the REGEDIT command, and navigating to: Use the Registry Editor and the following directions at your own risk.Īlmost all of the processes that don’t belong to Windows or to open applications are called from within the registry. TechRepublic does not and will not support problems that arise from editing your registry. Using the Windows Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems requiring the reinstallation of your operating system and possible loss of data. The following section involves editing your system registry. For example, the process SPOOLSV.EXE is the Windows print spooler. The other thing that you need to realize is that many of the running processes belong to Windows. You could also return to the Applications tab, right-click on an application and select the Go To Process command from the resulting shortcut menu. To see which processes are related to applications, you can close an application and see which processes disappear. First, some of the currently running processes are related to applications that may be open at the moment. Doing so will display a rather long list of the various processes that are currently running on your system.īefore you freak out over how much stuff is running on your system, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. If you really want to see what programs are running on your system, select the Processes tab. This list is deceptive, though, because it only shows applications that currently have a visible window open. The Applications tab will show you which applications are currently running on your system. If you press and then click the Task Manager button, you will see the Windows Task Manager. Keep in mind that this only deletes the Startup shortcut, not the application. You can easily remove a program from the Startup menu by right-clicking on it and selecting the Delete command from the resulting shortcut menu. When you do, you will see a menu containing the Startup items. You can access the Startup folder by clicking Start | All Programs (or Programs, depending on your Start menu style) | Startup. Perhaps the most obvious place to look for an application that automatically starts when Windows is launched is in the Startup folder. For the purposes of this Daily Feature, I will walk you through all of the possible startup locations within Windows XP. For example, there are startup locations that exist in Windows 98 and Windows Me that don’t exist in Windows XP. Further complicating the problem is that the startup locations are inconsistent among versions of Windows. There are many different places that a program can be called from during the Windows startup. Today, however, this simply isn’t the case. What to know before you dig into the startup areasīack in the days of DOS, if a program was automatically loading when a computer started up, there were only two places that the program could have been called from: the CONFIG.SYS file or the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

Downloaded ZIP file from Github contains `Nocturn-RS4L/Live/src` folder which has a lot of *.py source files.ĥ. Midiscripts - thank you, everything working, such a simple solution that just needed someone with expertise to point it out. If after this procedure, the script does not behave as before or simply does not do anything then we deal with may deeper issue on Ableton API level. Timeline enhancements Edit an animated element I did have one problem when using Greenshot, which occurred I tried to capture an entire Internet Explorer window. As someone who captures a lot of screenshots that contain email addresses and other personal info, I find this tool invaluable, and it’s easier to use than a similar feature offered by SnagIt. Included among its editing options is “Obfuscate,” which lets you render a section of the screen unreadable by pixelation or blurring. Greenshot’s built-in image editor is more basic than SnagIt’s, though it does offer one feature that is very useful. This menu pops up as soon as you capture a screen, and allows you to choose between saving the image, opening it in Greenshot’s image editor, copying it to the clipboard, sending it to your printer, uploading it to Imgur, or opening it in a variety of programs, such as Microsoft Outlook, Powerpoint, Word, Excel, or Paint, or Mozilla Thunderbird. Greenshot gives you a few more options in terms of sending your captured screen to other programs or places with the destination picker. When you capture a screen in SnagIt, that program automatically opens the image in its editor, which is a full-featured editing tool. Greenshot offers most of the same features as a commercial screen capture program SnagIt, a $50 rival, offers these same capture options, but adds a few more, such as the ability to capture just a menu, text from a Window, images from a Web page, and recording video from the screen. If you choose to capture a region, Greenshot lets you select it with a green overlay that makes it easy to pick the area you’d like to capture. You simply press your assigned hotkey and the capture is done. Greenshot can capture a region of your screen, the last region you selected with Shift & Print Screen, one program window with Alt & Print Screen, the full screen with Ctrl & Print Screen, or an Internet Explorer window with Ctrl & Shift & Print Screen. I did so easily in the program’s settings menu, and within minutes I was up and running. In my case, the Print Screen key was already assigned to another screen capture program, so Greenshot notified me that I’d need to choose a new one. By default, the program uses the “Print Screen” key (sometimes marked Prnt Scr) as its hotkey pressing that key in combination with another key (such as Alt or Ctrl) allows for different types of screen capture. Greenshot downloads and installs easily, and requires little to no setup. But after using it, I’m a believer: Greenshot may not be perfect, but this free tool has me wondering why I’d ever pay for one like it again. I have to admit I was skeptical about Greenshot, a free, open-source screenshot tool that claims to be as full-featured as similar paid programs. Most of the time, these files will use very little space and won’t cause a problem. Some users may think that leaving invalid preferences and support files on the hard drive does not do much harm. Their calendars later became portions of the large Aztec calendar stones. They left celestial-cycle records indicating their belief that the creation of the world occurred in 3114 BCE. This culture and its related predecessors spread across Central America between 2600 BCE and 1500 CE, reaching their apex between 250 and 900 CE. In contrast, the Mayans of Central America relied not only on the Sun and Moon but also the planet Venus to establish 260-day and 365-day calendars. Based on this knowledge, they devised a 365-day calendar that seems to have begun around 3100 BCE, which thus seems to be one of the earliest years recorded in history.īefore 2000 BCE, the Babylonians (in today's Iraq) used a year of 12 alternating 29-day and 30-day lunar months, resulting in a 354-day year. The earliest Egyptian calendar was based on the Moon’s cycles, but later the Egyptians realized that the “Dog Star” in Canis Major (which today’s astronomers call Sirius) rose next to the Sun every 365 days, about when the annual inundation of the Nile began. Was one of the early Egyptian calendars a 365-day calendar?.The purpose of Stonehenge, built beginning in 3000 BCE in England, is ultimately unknown, but its alignments suggest one of its reasons for existence was to determine seasonal or celestial events, such as lunar eclipses and solstices. Five thousand years ago, Sumerians in the Tigris-Euphrates valley (in present-day Iraq) developed a calendar that divided the year into 30-day months, divided the day into 12 periods (each corresponding to two of our hours), and divided these periods into 30 parts (each like four of our minutes). Hunters in Europe over 20,000 years ago scratched lines and gouged holes in sticks and bones, possibly counting the days between phases of the Moon. Historians know little about the details of timekeeping in prehistoric eras, but wherever archaeologists do digs, they usually discover that in every culture some people were concerned with measuring and recording the passage of time. The Media version is best for recovering photos, videos, and audio. The Basic version gives you full access to the Recover Files option, which does a quick scan of your drive and restores whatever files are found. We were given license keys for the Basic, Media, and Pro versions. To have the program activated, simply click Register at the top right and either enter a license key or access your RemoONE account. We’ll tackle each of these with their own specific scenarios. There are 3 recovery options to choose from: recover files, recover photos, and recover drives. Putting Remo Recover in Testing Remo Recover Windows Reviewįor this test, we’ll try out each feature of Remo Recover and see how well it works. I will guide you through how to recover the important files using Remo Recover, that have been accidentally deleted. I’m here to share what works, what doesn’t, and what could be improved based on my experience with other similar products. I’ve tried out Remo Recover for Windows, Mac, and Android for a couple of days to share what I learned from the program and if it works as it is advertised. The great thing is that I was able to try out a number of data recovery tools and have ample knowledge of what I want from them. I’ve corrupted hard drives and lost tons of files. There are times when my curiosity gets the best of me and I end up making things worse than before I started. My curiosity for hardware and software brings me to the very core of the products. I’m the type of guy who likes to tinker with technology. Difficult to locate specific files amongst thousands of deleted files found after scan. What I Don’t Like: Very long scanning times. You can save recovery sessions to load on another date. Was able to retrieve a lot of deleted files to a usable state. Varying software versions depending on your recovery needs. What I Like: Lots of easy-to-follow instructions from start to finish. Also, we recommend you skip the Basic version and go for Media or Pro version directly. Thus we believe the program is better at retrieving data from a smaller-volume drive. However, we found that Remo Recover did a fantastic job of recovering files from an SD card. This made it almost impossible to find the specific files I was looking for. Most of the files lost their file names and were renamed by file number. The Pro version took a long time to scan a 1TB hard drive and found over 200,000 files. The Media version was able to find around 30 GBs of photos with about 85% of the files deleted still usable. The Media and Pro versions did a much better job. Sadly, it wasn’t able to find the specific files I deleted for the test. The Basic version simply does a quick scan of the storage device and tries to recover files. Most of us still live in the PC world and use the Windows operating system.įor Windows, there’s a Basic, Media, and Pro version available. We tried out all three versions, but for the sake of the length, this review will focus on the Windows version. Remo Recover is a data recovery program for Windows, Mac, and Android. |
